Succession Planning for Associations
Dave Fellers, FASAE, CAE

Friday, June 3, 2016, 9:15 - 11:00am
Marvin Auditorium 101B, TSCPL, 1515 SW 10th

Association CEOs have indicated that up to 70% will be leaving their position in the next five years…45%within the next three years. Yet, only 25% of associations have developed an internal succession plan for the CEO.

Without advance planning for the departure of the chief of staff, leadership and remaining staff are often at a loss on the process they should follow, the timeline and financial impact of replacing a top executive. This can cause morale issues with staff and can be devastating to an elected leader who now must focus on how to hire a new executive rather than accomplishing the organization’s strategic plan.

Dave Fellers, FASAE, CAE, a 30 year veteran of association management and now a leading consultant onstrategic planning and contingency planning, will provide association leaders with the steps in developing a succession plan. This will include procedures for a planned (retirement) or unexpected CEO departure (changing jobs, death or disability), timelines for when various steps should be taken, importance of open communications, formation of a search committee, identification of the search process – internal or using a recruitment firm -- key contact lists, costs that must be considered, interim staff and leader responsibilities and development of goals for the new executive.
